Citroën DS in USA und LHM
Verfasst: Di 29. Sep 2009, 08:17
-----------------------
My father was involved with Citroën, he was the technical manager for
the western division of Citroën Cars Corporation's office in Los Angeles. He
started in 1956 when they opened the US market until he retired in 1980 from
Peugeot Motors of America, one of three on the west coast that were
transferred there when they closed Citroën's North American operations.
In reply to your question and the statement from the chairman of the German
DS club I'm afraid the gentleman is 100% incorrect. The LHM vehicles were
most definitely sold and officially imported by Citroën on the US market but
only as of mid-1969 as it took the US bureaucrats two years to approve the
LHM system which is why a lot of people will refer to a 1969 model year as
an early or late or 69½ D-model. All hydraulic vehicle after mid-69 (D & SM)
were LHM and not LHS-2.
[JN: mit mid-69 meinen die Ami's die Mitte vom Modeljahr 1969]
There were a couple of "fly by night" companies claiming to be official
Citroën importers but there was no official factory importer representing
Citroën after the end of 1977; they (Citroën) kept an office at Peugeot
headquarters for a few years both in CA and NJ but nothing else. Anyone else
was not official nor endorsed by Automobiles Citroën in France.
He may have been talking about Trend Imports that were bringing in the CX
and a few GS and there was another chap importing cars in the LA area but
his name escapes me, I believe he got in trouble with the federal government
for his "gray market" importations!
I currently own 4 D-models, 2 1969½ one is a break (bvm) and the other a
Pallas (bvh) and a 1971 Pallas (bvm) all originally US-export vehicles and
all LHM, my 1965 Chapron (bvh) is my only LHS vehicle.
Hope this helps clarify things.
----------------------
Auf der englische sprachige E-Mail Liste wurden inzwischen dementsprechend viele offiziell in USA/Canada (nach Anfang '69) gelieferte DS mit LHM erwaehnt.
